Great A to Z list, Megan.

The Wall Street Journal just ran an article last month about how to name your business. Almost to the letter, it shares some real-world examples that support your 26 points.

The article, by Suzanne Barlyn, is entitled Name That Firm.

You'll find it here:

A phone system is important. I would consider using a virtual attendant such as Gotvmail. That way you're not tied to a piece of hardware that gets discontinued within a year or so.

[...] 1) Find the right name for your company. A short name that conveys what you do is always the best. Try to find a name that allows you to secure its .com domain name. Also, always make sure to do a little bit of research to ensure that the name you want to use isn’t already trademarked or in use by another person or company. Megan from PartnerUp wrote an excellent article on our blog about how to name a company. [...]

I would second the idea of going with your gut instinct on a brand name. I have come up with two names for two different businesses and then had backups. The first name came up with was the well received by all those that reviewed it. Nice Post!

The article is right on target when it comes to bootstrapping it. I remember telling our first prospective clients that we were funded by Chase and First USA... credit cards.

This is certainly better than buying the "startups" at the later stage and pay through the noses due to the ridiculous artificial valuation that these "startups" get and after the acquisition not being able to figure out what to do. Skype's acquisition by eBay is an example of one of these scenarios where eBay still cannot find the synergies and monetize the acquisition.
