Complete List of Q3 2009 Web, Internet and Tech Acquisitions
Posted by Megan Dorn under Acquisitions
Acquisition activity during the first half of the year (Q1 2009, Q2 2009) was excruciatingly slow. Economic turmoil forced many companies to keep a close watch on their wallets. As a result Q1 and Q2 combined saw a mere 45 total acquisitions for a measly $7.3 billion.
Q3 2009, however, has shown a complete turnaround. With a total of 47 acquisitions amounting to approximately $18.2 billion (only 20 were disclosed), activity for this past quarter has already surpassed that of the entire first half of the year. In fact, Q3 2009 shows more than double the number of acquisitions than any of the previous four quarters, while the combined total amount still doesn’t exceed that of Q3 2009 alone. Here’s the breakdown:
- Quarter 3 2008: 18 acquisitions ($5.0 billion)
- Quarter 4 2008: 15 acquisitions ($3.0 billion)
- Quarter 1 2009: 21 acquisitions ($1.5 billion)
- Quarter 2 2009: 24 acquisitions ($5.8 billion)
- Quarter 3 2009: 47 acquisitions ($18.2 billion)
We’d like to say thanks to all of the great blogs out there (TechCrunch, GigaOM, Mashable, VentureBeat and more) whose frequent tracking of acquisitions makes this list possible.
If you know of any acquisitions that we’ve missed, please leave a comment on this post and we’ll update it.

BMC Software Acquires MQSoftware
BMC Software (NYSE: BMC) has acquired MQSoftware. The acquisition expands BMC’s leading Business Service Management platform to include support for the entire middleware infrastructure and high-value business transactions it supports. Through this acquisition, BMC now offers the industry’s only unified solution for monitoring messaging middleware and associated business transactions across the enterprise — with the depth and breadth of coverage that IT requires to deliver improved service at a lower cost — from a single console and a single vendor.
Market Demands
Middleware is the cornerstone for integrating disparate systems across the enterprise to deliver business services. A recent BMC survey showed that 92 percent of large IT shops use WebSphere MQ middleware to help deliver the business services while 66 percent of IT shops in general reported using WebSphere MQ as a crucial part of their IT infrastructure.
Leverage Existing Partnership
Because MQSoftware is a BMC Technology and MarketZone partner, BMC has a strong understanding of the MQSoftware portfolio and has already integrated MQSoftware’s transaction monitoring product into BMC’s mainframe transaction solution. This acquisition will provide customers with a scalable, proven and complete WebSphere MQ monitoring solution, while further strengthening BMC’s market leadership.
What Does This Mean for Existing Customers?
BMC is committed to supporting and enhancing MQSoftware products, services, and training solutions. Customers can continue to expect exceptional customer support and leading-edge technology. The combination of MQSoftware’s offerings with BMC offerings will deliver more powerful solutions for our customers. As our two companies complete the integration, please continue to use the same channels of communication that you have always used.
