During 2008, ________ dropped drastically, and University of Florida researchers expect this trend to continue throughout 2009. No, I’m not talking about home values, the unemployment rate or anything else related to the economy. So what is ________?

Shark attacks.

That’s right. The number of shark attacks worldwide has apparently been following the same pattern as our economy—slowing in 2008 and continuing to slow further in 2009.

I would think that experts would blow this off as a mere coincidence, but that isn’t the case. Instead they conclude that the reduced number of shark attacks is an indirect result of the recession. Basically they believe that because fewer people can afford to take beach vacations that fewer people will be in the water and so fewer people will be attacked by sharks.

Personally, I’m still going to chalk this up as a regular old coincidence, but I suppose it’s possible that the effects of the recession are being felt by humans and animals alike.

Have a great weekend!
