Posted by Steve N. under Acquisitions
Below we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of all of the first quarter 2008 mergers and acquisitions in the web, social networking, technology, internet advertising, hardware, software and mapping industries. We’ve tried to provide an overview of the blog/media/press coverage for each acquisition, and we’ve linked to official press releases where available.
Q1 2008 M&A activity picked up where 2007 left off, with strong numbers in the internet & technology sector.
Here’s a few interesting stats that we’ve noticed:
- The majority of deals were in the $100-$250 Million price range.
- The average deal was $215.9 Million in Q1 2008.
- Of the 22 acquisitions were disclosed, the total value of these deals was $4.75 Billion.
Here’s the breakdown of deals by price:
- Under $25M: 2 deals
- $25M - $99M: 5 deals
- $100M - $250M: 10 deals
- $250M or more: 5 deals
The trend of more and more acquisitions in the web/internet and social network space continues to lead the way in 2008 with 17 acquisitions taking place thus far. Software acquisitions also appeared strong in Q1. They led the charge in average deal value with an average acquisition price of $288.8 million.
If you know of any mergers or acquisitions that we’ve missed, please leave a comment on this post and we’ll update.
Finally, thanks to all of the great blogs out there (TechCrunch, GigaOm, Mashable, VentureBeat, ReadWriteWeb, and more) whose frequent tracking of acquisitions makes this list possible.

So what do you think they are really trying to accomplish? do you think it’s just a bigger and better audience to advertise (and sell) to?
